The government has officially launched a program that involves Greek language, history and culture tests, required for immigrants to be able to apply for long term residence permit. The program provides for a very low max quota system for courses’ participants. It is nevertheless considered to be an important step towards the effective implementation of the long-term residence directive. The latter has been formally transposed through the 2006 migration bill (law n.3386/2005) but it took three years for the competent ministries to setup a coordinated system for the LTR status acquisition. It goes noted that according to the most recent data, 5 immigrants have managed to obtain such status, either because they were graduates from Greek educational institutions, or under the provisions in force until 8/2008 which states that the holders of a language degree of level C2 are not required to undergo language exams
