Migrants to be recruited by the Greek Police as mediators in Asylum system

The Minister for the Protection of Citizens of the newly elected government announced hiring of migrants as mediators in the Greek Police departments, as an effort to reconcile police officers with migrant population, often in detention and suffering police violence. Additionally, he announced to eradicate “fascist elements and behaviours” from the police corps, as well as the establishment of a Complaints’ Office in cooperation with the Greek Ombudsman, in order to control and punish the abuse committed by police officers. Furthermore, he proposed that the asylum system and asylum applications be processed by the Ministry of Interior Affairs and no longer by the Police.
