Municipal councils for immigrants’ integration established by law
The Greek government passed a law on local administration establishing for the first time in Greece immigrants’ integration councils in Greek municipalities. Such councils have the task of providing consultation and support to integration process in local society. They are composed by 5 up to 11 persons appointed by the local municipal council. Members may be municipal councillors, representatives of immigrant associations or elected immigrant representatives, representatives of organisations and social partners, who are active on immigration issues on the local level. Immigrant integration council are expected to record and investigate problems of immigrants, in relation to integration and contacts with public municipal authorities. Main scope is to promote social integration, especially through provision of counselling and support and sensitisation of local population strengthening social cohesion.
