During the election campaign prior to the parliamentary election on October 1st, 2006, very specific ethnic or religious groups were targeted. Jörg Haider, BZÖ, demanded a “Chechen free Carinthia”, he wanted all the Chechen asylum seekers that were sent to Carinthia by the Federal Ministry of the Interior to be provided with basic care to be returned from the responsibility of the federal province to that of the federal state. The FPÖ aimed its attacks against Muslims: One of the election campaign posters said “At home instead of Islam”.
