Exploitation and discrimination of foreign workers
The drastic case of discrimination revealed in December 2009. It concerned citizens of the Philippines employed at a mushroom production plant. They worked for 11-16 hours a day, 6-7 days a week, and were not paid on time. Analogous violations of labour law were not noted with regard to Polish citizens. Moreover, the Filipinos’ piece-work contracts provided for the lower rates for the collection of mushrooms as compared to those signed by their Polish colleagues: the former’s rates were set at the level of PLN 0.35-0.55 for a kilo of the produce (depending on the size and quality) whereas Poles were paid from PLN 0.4 to 1.2 per a kilo.
