Local conflicts linked to immigration by right wing politicians
On the first weeks of May, some disturbances occurred in the neighbourhood of Bela Vista, in the outskirts of Setúbal, a city in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, were many descendants of immigrants, namely of African origin, live. Some cars were burned and police agents attacked. The media gave the events a wide coverage, and a debate on security issues followed, where some political leaders referred to the need of controlling immigration, thus linking directly the debate on security to the debate on immigration policies. Other political actors highlighted the situation of social and economic exclusion in which the inhabitants of Bela Vista live, and asked for more effective inclusion policies.
