A case of Afrophobia reported in the media is the racist abuse and physical violence against a Somali woman and her children perpetrated by a group of young men in a small town, Tomelilla. The perpetrators shouted racisst and offensive words such as “fucking negro” and “take off the curtain (veil)” to the woman and her daughter. They were also subjected to physical violence when the youth threw stones at them, hitting the woman while her children watched. When her six-year old daughter was hit in the back of the head, the woman reported the incident to the police, who recorded the assault as incitement to racial hatred and as a hate crime.
