There are specific 'minority schools' for children of Muslim minority in western Thrace, which have been criticised for reproducing inequality for minority children. Roma children remain at a great disadvantage with regard to education. As the 4th ECRI report on Greece notes, "there are cases of Roma children being separated from other children within the same school or in the vicinity thereof. In one case, the European Court of Human Rights deemed Greece in violation of Article 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights (prohibition of discrimination in the enjoyment of the rights contained in the Convention) in combination with Article 2 of Protocol 1 (right to education). ECRI has been informed that in Spata, where there was an initial refusal to register Roma children for school attendance, these children are currently attending school in a separate class to enable them to gradually adapt to the school environment." |
